Call for Research Fellowships at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies – FRIAS Fellowship Programmes 2027/28

FRIAS Fellowship Programmes are designed to give researchers time, space and support to advance their projects, exchange ideas across disciplines and develop new perspectives.

The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) is the international research college of the University of Freiburg. It brings together scholars from Freiburg and around the world, offering temporary fellowships that allow researchers to focus entirely on their projects within a vibrant community of diverse cultural and academic backgrounds. FRIAS provides exceptional support to help fellows succeed.

FRIAS offers funding programmes for promising research projects. These programmes are open to members of the University of Freiburg as well as researchers from other institutions worldwide. FRIAS also organizes events that involve its fellows, university members, and the general public, enriching the academic and cultural life of the community.

FRIAS invites researchers from around the world and across disciplines to apply for a fellowship. Our programmes contain:

Early Career Fellowships for researchers who obtained their PhD within the past eight years

• At least six months of international academic experience

• Duration: 4–10 months

 Senior Fellowships for researchers with a PhD and at least eight years of postdoctoral experience

• At least six months of international academic experience

• Duration: 3–8 months

Sustainable Governance Senior Fellowships for Social Sciences and Humanities researchers based in Africa

• PhD and at least eight years of postdoctoral experience

• At least six months of international academic experience

• Humanities and Social Sciences

• Duration: 6 months

Start of the programme: flexible between 1 September 2027 and 31 August 2028.
